MEAK - The Current Heart Projects

During 2009 MEAK has donated a modern heart and lung pump and a blood heater/cooler unit to Kenyatta National Hospital in Nairobi, replacing their old and worn out units, thus ensuring that our future missions to that hospital are secured.

We have also donated similar equipment to The Mombasa Hospital in Mombasa and after extensive negotiations and discussions with the hospital management, we have planned a Heart Trip to that hospital for June 2010. It has been a long held aim of MEAK to make heart surgery and cardiac care a possibility for the residents of Mombasa and Coast Province (population, 4 million people plus 200,000-300,000 tourists each year) which at this juncture is not available as none of the local hospitals have the necessary equipment. The June 2010 trip will be the first small step in this process, carrying out a limited surgical trip operating on some of the many local children desperately in need of corrective surgery. We are also presently in discussions with prospective donors with regard to the purchase and installation of a cardio-catheter laboratory in order that the setting up of a modern and effective cardiac care centre in Mombasa can become a reality. It is MEAK’S view that this will be a very viable possibility making the availability of cardiac care for the people of the Coast from Somalia through to Tanzania a cheaper alternative than is presently available to them. As a spin off, MEAK, and other visiting cardiac teams, who are only interested in the provision of corrective treatment for children, would have these facilities at their disposal.
